Embedit.in - Visualize your wiki work

I found this cool site that will allow you to add a visual representation of your wiki page that you created. . .it's much more effective than a simple link!

Week 15: The Beginning?

Wow, I can't believe we've reached the end of another semester. I sincerely hope that this not just the end of the class, but the beginning of your new future as a technology using educator!!

Tonight I hope to ensure that everyone is clear on how to get the narratives into TaskStream and that all of yours blogs are sufficiently dialed out!! When your blog is finished, including all artifacts, labels, NETS correlated, etc., then you can submit the Emerging Technology assignment.

Please use the time tonight to get any and all questions answered!!!

This week's question: What technology would you have liked to learn in this class that you didn't learn? What technology do you see yourself using most as an educator?

Week 14: If I Google Earth, will it Google Back?

Okay, it's the penultimate day of class!! We will be doing a small task with Google Earth and then talking about out blogs and TaskStream. . . .I hope everyone is caught up on her/his work!! If not, please try and get everything in ASAP so you can receive credit for what you have done.

Ensure you email or ask questions if there is anything you don't understand about what is due.

Next week: I want to focus on getting all of the narratives up on TaskStream so you can walk out of class finished with all of your work. I will talk to the group in the beginning and then try to meet with everyone individually to ensure you understand the narrative process!!

This week's question:
What has been your favorite assignment for this class and why?

Week 13: Did Spiderman Weave Web 2.0?

As of yesterday, I have graded all work that was past due, including any regrades. I noticed that there were quite a few who didn't upload to excel/speadsheet or the wiki so I moved the due date to tomorrow. . .last time!! Please check your grades to see that you have either a grade or a present in your inbox. Some of you were collaborators on projects but didn't submit your individual copies. . .Also, there are around three students who have not requested feedback from me in TaskStream!! Without TaskStream, there will be no grade for the course. . .please see me if you are one of those people.

This week: Most people should be finishing your iMovie software proficiency. Everyone can be working on the EdTechProfile post assessment as well as ensuring that your blogs are up-to-date with attached assignments, proper titles, NETS-T correlation, etc. . .I will discuss some if this in class tonight. It is also time to revisit the NETS narratives for NETS III, IV, & V!

We only have three more classes, so please get any help you might need or schedule some time to meet with me individually.

This week's question: What is your current or all-time favorite quote? It could be about education or life in general.

Week 12: If iMovie, Does it Come Before C?

Okay, I now officially know that I cannot be a single father. . .I have spent the better part of the last two weeks either chasing my children around or trying to get ready for school. . . dealing with hamster bites, cat snot, and two daughter who love each other, but don't necessarily like each other at the current moment. . .
Why do I tell you this? Well, other than my own general neurosis, I tell you because I have accomplished nothing in terms of grading past assignments. . .I vow to get everything graded by next week. . .or die trying.

This week we are going to learn how to use iMovie. . .it is not the movie project, but an assignment designed to ensure you can all use this software to edit movies. . .because if you can do this, you CAN make a movie.

This week's Question:
What was the funnest thing (most fun for my English teachers) you did in the last two weeks?

Week 11: Spring Break

I hope you enjoyed your Spring Break!! Here's a cool video to watch that pertains to all of the content of this course. . .it is also made in the Common Craft style of Lee LeFever. . .

Week 10: If My Spring Breaks, Can I Have it Replaced?

I hope my daughters appreciate how much time I waste trying to do new Photoshop effects to their pictures (click on the picture to get a closer look at how cool this is). . .for the brave, this tutorial can be found on my delicious page under the, you guessed it, photoshop tag.

Almost time for Spring Break. . .some of you probably thought you would never get here. As I work to catch up on all of my grading, I am honestly impressed with just how well you are all doing as a group. . .When I think back to day one, I must admit I was a bit afraid . . . :-) I will get the Inspiration and Copyright assignments graded over break. . .check WebCT for grades and any returned assignments.

This week: we will be introduced to the new collaborative wiki project that we will be doing with Dr. Hanor's 422 classes (I think there are 3!). . .also, I will be going over the Excel Spreadsheet assignment that you will be completing over our break. . .don't forget that there will be a virtual class on April 8.
Note: It would really be in your best interest to work on as much of your TaskStream narratives as you can over the break. All we have left to finish is a Social Justice movie, the EdTechProfile post-assessment, and the narratives for TaskSStream!!

Journal 9: This Comes to us from T-H-E Journal. "The Kids are All Right," by John K. Waters.

Journal 10: (this is for my overachievers who want to finish this assignment over the break ;-) I want you to search L&L or the the Internet for a journal article around an issue educational technology. . .ensure you give it a good citation and perhaps even a link if it is something that I may not have read. I can offer a suggestion, but I won't post it for a week or so.

This week's Question: If I could send you on your ideal vacation over spring break, where would you go and what would you do?

Week 9: Exactly how quick is a wiki?

I must say that I am impressed with all of the progress the class had made!! You are able to recognize similarities among programs and determine how to embed content you your blog!!

This week: we will be discussing Web 2.0 assignment and perhaps even get into the wiki! Don't forget that you always have something to work on. . .whether it's a journal entry or your narratives for TaskStream!! The copyright and journals 1-5 are past due. . . I will be grading soon.

Journal 8: is also the web 2.0 assignment. . .the instructions are on a separate journal post. . .

This week's question: How do you feel about same sex education? Explain. . .

Journal 8

Web 2.0

There are also instructions from webCT for Web 2.0!

You will first join the classroom 2.0 community, then complete the following assignment:

I would like you to pick a TOOL from the Classroom 2.0 website (see link on blog), choose a link from the tools (not content area) list on the right hand column for a technology that interests you, and follow a discussion or two that relates to your technology. In the title bar, put journal title followed by the technology you have chosen. (For example: Journal 8: Microblogging). In the journal, I would like you to define the technology (assume your reader has never heard of the technology) and then report out on what you learned from the tool discussion (follow at least two threaded discussions) and read and comment on at least three peers who have chosen a different tool. You reporting out should contain the 200-250 word minimum, but you do not need to ask and answer questions. In the assignments section, you will submit your peers names.

For Submission: you will only have to submit your tool (e.g. microblogging) and the peers whose blogs you commented on with their tool (john - collaborative documents). You can simply type the names into the html creator!

Week 8: Where do you find your Inspiration?

I don't know why I find these "demotivator" posters funny, but I do ;-)

Take the class quiz

I believe our glass is half-full . . .we have reached the midpoint of the semester. . .painless isn't it? Isn't it?

I went to the Computer Using Educators Conference in Palm Springs this weekend!!! Remind me to tell you about it! I took a tour of the Lennon Bus. . .you should check it out! Also, remind me to tell you about Google Forms!!!!!

I have graded and regraded everything that is due (I think). Please check your grades and see if anything was returned. . .For TaskStream, don't forget that you should have posted your NETS-I narrative for feedback. . .It's not that there is a hard due-date, but the quicker you get feedback the better.

I believe the journal articles are due this week. . .and you have the copyright assignment. . .and you can be working on Journals 6 & 7.

Tonight: we will be grading the PowerPoints. . please don't forget you need to bring at least three copies of the rubric with you to class!! We will also go over how to add the PowerPoint to the blog and we will discuss the Inspiration assignment!

Journals: I have already assigned journals 6 & 7, so you will not need a new post this week. If you must, feel free to scan L&L or the web for articles about technology and education. If you are not that motivated, I will post journal 8 next week.

This week's questions: After looking at the results of last week's question, it became crystal clear that parental support was the overwheling key to everyone's educational success. This makes me question the belief in an educational meritocracy. Imagine what your future would have been without parental support. Where do you see your role as a teacher in addressing this issue with your students? Do you think it's your responsibility? Explain.

Week 7: Do Two Copywrongs Make a Copyright?

Almost half-way. . .so is the class half empty or half full? Assuming you are all still in the learning phase. . .I'll say half-full.

You should be working on your TaskStream collaboration. . .as well as Journals 1-5, and any other assignment that might still be in progress for you.

This week: we will discuss the use of rubrics to grade the PowerPoints, look at your narratives for NETS-I, and introducing our copyright assignment.

Journals 6-10: (articles are for journals 6 & 7) As we move on to round two of your journal assignments, we get the new March/April issue of L&L, which contains at least two good articles that are relevant to what we have been learning. "Grow Your Personal Learning Network," by David Warlick and "Mining for Gold," by Chris Bigenho.

This week's question: With the current economic situation having great impact on education, I want to know to what do you attribute your educational success (as I believe almost everyone at least has a BA)? Was it teachers, family, or something else that you attribute your success?

Week 6: Can GoogleDocs Cure Computer Viruses?

I'm sure by now that everyone has the mad skills to work for Apple or Microsoft? are you a Mac or a PC?

This week: I will finish the discussion of how to use GoogleDocs to collaborate on the narratives for NETS I. Technically, the narratives are part of your final assignment, but I want to ensure everyone knows the correct way to write the narratives as early as possible. We will also discuss how to upload your newsletters to your blog and how to label your artifacts on your blog to meet the NETS-T! Then, we will discuss the PowerPoint assignment. . .phew.

Journal 5: This is the last journal in the Journal 1-5 assignment. "Collaboration in aWeb 2.0 Environment", by Glen Bull in the Apr 06 issue of L&L. If you were one of the early readers of this blog (. . darn you, Mike and Kristen), you may have noticed that I accidentally posted the same article from Journal 3. . .that is now corrected (or perhaps it really never happened ;-)

This week's Question:
In all of your school experience, who was your favorite teacher and why? Would you like to become the same type of teacher?

Week 5: Can You Step into the Same TaskStream Twice?

Check out the cool picture. . .I wish it were me, but it is Evan(a recent CSUSM grad), one of the people with whom I was snowboarding (I did; however, take the pic w/my iPhone and do the cool text and color effect with Photoshop ;-)

As I am still recovering from my short vacation - and over 4ft of fresh powder in 4 days - I haven't had time to do much grading this week. Don't say I didn't warn you.

This week: I believe that we do have almost everyone entered into TaskStream so we will discuss this tool as well as discuss GoogleDocs as a collaborative tool to assist each other on the required narratives. Check out webCT for a sample of how the narratives might be written.
Narratives Using GoogleDocs:
1. You will begin to write the narrative for NETS-I using Google Docs. (I will go over the process in class)
2. Invite 2 peers to view and comment on your narrative. Everyone should use his/her Gmail Account.
3. After addressing the feedback from your peers, you will submit your narrative in the text section of TaskStream.
4. Then, you will request feedback and leave a comment on TaskStream telling me which peer revisions you made!

Journal 4: "Create, Collaborate, Communicate: Empowering Students With 21st Century Skills", by Chris Riedel. Note: this is from T-H-E Journal, not ISTE's L&L!!!!

This Week's Question: What is your all-time or current favorite teacher movie and why?

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Week 4: Is Social Bookmarking Considered Tagging?

As we start the forth week of your new conversion to TechnoGeek (although some of already had it in you), you should be developing the mad skillz of the students you will be teaching.

I have graded all of the Intro letters and the EdTechProfiles, so either look for your grade or check to see if you find the assignment back in your inbox. . .

This week: we will discover the amazing world of social bookmarking and begin to learn how to navigate TaskStream.

Journal 3: "Keep Them Chatting", by Jennie Cole in the Feb 09 issue of L&L.
NOTE: Don't forget to follow the Journal article format, e.g., the title of the post should be Journal 1, Journal 2, etc., the APA citation should be created using Citation Machine, and the 2 Questions and Answers should stand out to the reader (me!).

This week's Question: What is your current favorite or all time favorite book or author? Catcher in the Rye is my all-time favorite book and Tortilla Curtain, by T.C. Boyle, is my contemporary favorite novel.

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

Week 3: Do you need permission slips for a virtual field trip?

By now, I hope everyone is getting up to speed on the workings of the course. . .you may by this time have mastered webCT, bought a mac and entered the blogosphere. . .phew, that is quite an accomplishment.

I expect the EdTechProfile to be complete, the intro letter finished and your blog up and running. . .and you may or may not have completed Journal 1.

This week:
we are going to work on the newsletter and if time permits, we will get into TaskStream and the NETS

Journal #2:
"Museums in the Classroom", page 36 of the February 2009 issue of L&L. . .Don't forget to use the Citation Machine to cite the source.

This week's Question: What is your current favorite band/musician/or music? Notice I said "current favorite" so you are not committed to this forever ;-)

Monday, January 26, 2009

Week 2: Can You Judge a Facebook by its Cover?

One week down. . .fifteen short weeks left ;-)
By now, I hope you have created your class blog (I haven't received that many emails), written your Intro Letter (to include a picture in the post), and began to search for peer blogs to comment on. You should also have purchased your TaskStream account and subscribed to ISTE (at the new lower $39 rate).

At the beginning of class on Wednesday I will ensure your blogs are up and running with the required components and that you know how to leave comments on peer blogs, that you can self-enroll in the two required TaskStream portfolios, and you feel comfortable using WebCT and the Mac.

New assignments: I will briefly discuss the EdTechProfile, discuss the Journals 1-5 assignment and requirements, and if time permits, we will take a look at the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS).

Journal 1: "Passport to Digital Citizenship," by Mike Ribble. This is from the December/January 2008-2009. It should be a free download for another few days or until they post the February issue online..

This week's Question: What is your current favorite personal technology device (phone, camera, iPod, etc.) and why?

That's A Blog. . .I Say, That's a Blog Son!

(Bloghorn Leghorn)
Here are instructions for how to create your own blog. . .for the requirements of Journals 1-5, please see webCT. Don't worry, if this is too hard to read, there is a downloadable copy on webCT.

Read this document on Scribd: Publishing A Blog Summer08

Intro Letter Instructions!

Write a three-paragraph letter of introduction to me and your classmates that you will post on your class blog.
Content:

1st paragraph: Introduce who you are, where you are from, and where you went to school (K-12) and college.

2nd paragraph: Give an overview of your experience with technology. Are you a Mac or PC person? How much do you depend on technology on a daily basis? New question for technology: which version of Microsoft Office are you using the most (with the Office 07 release for PC and 08 release for Mac, the transition is not an easy one for most people. . .and some of my instructions will need to be modified depending on the version you are able to access!)

3rd paragraph:
Read the CSUSM/COE Mission Statement (It’s on the syllabus) and respond to any part of the statement that speaks to you. Was it a factor in your decision to apply at CSUSM?

Include a digital picture of yourself on the blog.

Also, comment on at least three other peers' blogs.

To submit in webCT: include your blog link and the names of the peers whose blogs you commented on.

Grading: Three points for the intro/pic on blog; two points for peer comments.

Allow Me. . .to Introduce Myself to Myself. . .Sample Intro Letter

My name is Jeffery Heil and I am from, well, I'm not sure. I was born in Las Vegas, NV and lived there until I was two years old. Then I moved to Phoenix, AZ and lived there until first grade. . .then I moved back and forth from Seattle, WA (actually, Marysville, but no one outside of the NW knows the city). I attended quite a few elementary schools in Phoenix and Marysville and then attended two high schools twice. I started high school in Marysville, moved to Phoenix, moved back to Marysville, then moved back to Phoenix to finish high school. I have attended almost every college in San Diego. . .but I received a BA in Philosophy from UCSD, my teaching credential from National University (awesome synchronized swimming team!), and my MA from SDSU in Liberal Arts & Sciences. I also dropped out of a doctoral program at Pepperdine University. . .if you think it's expensive to see a doctor, try earning one at a private university ;-)

My experiences with technology are varied. I had little or no experience until I began college, then I developed a love of computers. I am proficient in many different programs from basic word processing to advanced video editing. I have been teaching educational technology for the last 4+ years and I love to show people how to integrate technology into their teaching! I am currently a technology resource teacher for the San Diego County Office of Education's Juvenile Court and Community Schools, where I assist teachers in their use of technology to support student learning. Oh yeah, I am a Mac. My district is moving toward almost exclusively PCs, so I have been forced to go to the DarkSide during the day, but I guess it has made me more of a well-rounded computer geek ;-)

The mission statement of the CSUSM/COE was a factor in my decision to apply to be a distinguished teacher in residence (DTiR). As a San Diego County Office of Education employee, working for the Juvenile Court and Community Schools, I have been very committed to ensure educational equity for all students. The academic achievement gap isn't something that will go away with positive thoughts, but through hard work and dedication from everyone involved in the education of our students. I see CSUSM as an institution dedicated to producing educators who can affect positive change as we transform public education! Technology can be a great medium for social change, which I hope to model for you this fall!
