Week 5: Can You Step into the Same TaskStream Twice?

Check out the cool picture. . .I wish it were me, but it is Evan(a recent CSUSM grad), one of the people with whom I was snowboarding (I did; however, take the pic w/my iPhone and do the cool text and color effect with Photoshop ;-)

As I am still recovering from my short vacation - and over 4ft of fresh powder in 4 days - I haven't had time to do much grading this week. Don't say I didn't warn you.

This week: I believe that we do have almost everyone entered into TaskStream so we will discuss this tool as well as discuss GoogleDocs as a collaborative tool to assist each other on the required narratives. Check out webCT for a sample of how the narratives might be written.
Narratives Using GoogleDocs:
1. You will begin to write the narrative for NETS-I using Google Docs. (I will go over the process in class)
2. Invite 2 peers to view and comment on your narrative. Everyone should use his/her Gmail Account.
3. After addressing the feedback from your peers, you will submit your narrative in the text section of TaskStream.
4. Then, you will request feedback and leave a comment on TaskStream telling me which peer revisions you made!

This Week's Question: What is your all-time or current favorite teacher movie and why?

  1. As a future high school English teacher, I would definitely have to say that my favorite (and most inspirational) teacher movie would have to be Freedom Writers starring Hillary Swank. If you haven't seen it, you definitely need to. It's powerful.

  2. I would say a little lighter move Summer School, I like how Mark Harmon evolves from a teacher that is dragged into teaching to a teacher that has fun teaching and still goes a tad crazy.

  3. I love that movie Summer School, it is so hilarious! My favorite movie is School of Rock. I am a HUGE Jack Black fan and I could watch that movie over and over!

  4. That's a toughie... Probably Ferris Bueller's Day off, because there is no way in you-know-where that any principal would ever get away with what that one did! Crazy...

  5. I love the classic, To Sir with Love, and more recently Freedom Writers and Election, the Great Debaters was good too.

  6. A couple favorites include Summer School and Election.

  7. This might be pushing it, but my favorite all-time teacher movie is "The Horsemasters." This is a Disney film, made (I believe) in the '60's, about a British riding academy. Ultimately, I love this movie because I grew up watching it, and it's all about horses. Also, the students are diverse (from different socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as from other countries), and all come to the academy with different horsey "issues" (fear, overconfidence, etc.) The riding instructor is pretty traditional, and must learn to adjust her teaching approach to meet the needs of her students.

  8. My favorite teacher in a movie is definitely Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society. Classic inspiring teacher, challenging the students to go against "the man" and really have a passion for learning.

  11. I'm with Chelsea. Dead Poet's Society! Robin Williams' character looks/teaches like my dad.

Just like the movie Bambi, however, I refuse to watch the ending.

  13. I have two favorite teacher movies, those being Stand and Deliver and Dangerous Minds. As a kid I wanted to be just like Lueanne, Phifer's character.

  14. Akeelah and the Bee! Love Laurence Fishburne. He does a great job. Keke Palmer (Akeelah) was fabulous. I love how he steps out of the box in order to teach her in a way that is special to her.

  15. Mr. Holland's Opus was one of my favorites. The character used everything available to him to aid the student in the learning process. Since I am multi-subject the only elementary related movie is Kindergarten Cop. Arnold Schw... character reminds me of a teacher at my children's school who runs his class like a military school. He is popular w/ the boys.

  16. My favorite teacher movie is "Coach Carter." Even though this is a movie about a basketball coach I think the protagonist teaches his players more about the realities and importance of life, education, and basketball than anyone in the film.

  17. I thought Akeelah the Bee was such a sweet movie!

  18. I would have to say my favorite all-time teacher movie is Dangerous Minds with Michelle Pfeiffer. That movie is just very inspirational.

  23. I liked Mona Lisa Smile. It's a keeper.

  25. Freedom Writers for the win! I agree with you eryn. That movie was so moving and inspirational.. it cemented my move towards becoming a teacher!

  26. My favorite movies are October Sky and Rudy because both show the power of the human potential. The odds were stacked against the protagonists' in both movies, yet success and actualization prevailed with determination, goals, and gutts!!

  27. As a wanna-be music teacher, I'd have to pick Mr. Holland's Opus. Very inspirational and moving film.
